Sea of Stars on Vaadhoo Island, Maldives
If the romantic in you ever wondered what it would be like to swim amongst the stars, now’s your chance to find out! The surreal luminescence which seems to be mirroring the stars above the Vaadhoo Island is generated by phytoplankton called asdinoflagellates.
Neuschwanstein Castle, Bavaria, Germany
Can you name one thing more inherently romantic than sunsets? Why yes, that would be castles! Combine the two and you have a recipe for a perfect date. The fairytale-like Neuschwanstein Castle was built in 19th Century in honour of Richard Wagner, and its interiors are inspired by his characters. To make it even more magical, the castle was an inspiration for Disneyland’s Sleeping Beuaty Castle.
Northern Lights in Reykjavik, Iceland
There are a few things more romantic than watching Aurora Borealis light up the sky. In Iceland, the Northern Lights season runs from October till March so pick a clear night and head there to enjoy the spectacle! There are also many viewing spots outside of the city, with a better visibility.
The rocky, honeycomb landscape of Cappadocia is stunning in its own right but it’s even more beautiful at sunrise, when it becomes filled with hot air balloons soaring into the sky. There are many tour operators to choose from so it’s easy to join in the fun.
Waitomo Glowworm Caves, New Zealand
Another magical place, the Glowworm Caves are filled with thousands of shimmery lights radiating from tiny glowworms. You can enter the cave on a boat, which makes the experience even more romantic!
Island of Skye, West Coast of Scotland
The rugged, hauntingly mysterious landscape of the Isle of Skye, dominated by the majestic Cuillin Mountains, is a view to behold and it doesn’t take a hopeless romantic to appreciate its slightly wild beauty. Wrap up warm an explore the lochs, tiny fishing villages and, if you’re feeling adventurous, take a dip into the ice-cold waters of the magical Fairy Pools!
Surrounded by misty mountains and a large lake, the picture-perfect town of Hallstatt looks like it’s been taken straight out of a fairytale. If you’re travelling there in a low season you shouldn’t have any problems booking a room with a lake view.
Lake Hiller, Middle Island, Australia
Yes, this place really exists! The bubble-gum pink colour is not a result of Photoshop, but a dye created by bacteria living in salt crusts. Thank you, Mother Nature!
