Set in the heart of Pimlico in London’s Westminster where the perfectly manicured Victorian townhouses surround equally polished streets, The Melita may seem like an odd choice for a budget traveller and yet, with rates starting at £88 for a single and £118 for a double room in October, this gorgeous hotel stands out amongst its three star competitors.
Quintessentially British, I loved arriving at The Melita’s front door to be greeted by an immaculately white entryway supported by two pillars proudly adorned with British flags – I believe that the devil’s in the details when it comes to accommodation and the Melita got it spot on!
I spent two nights at the hotel’s newly refurbished superior room which was a definite highlight of my stay. Offering a much more exclusive feel that the standard rooms, the double was relatively small but very comfortable – I was certainly happy to see the large bed with heavenly comfortable pillows after getting off my early morning flight! The building housing The Melita dates back to the 1850s, blending modern elements with more traditional features. Born and bread in Europe, I’ve always had a weak spot for architecture which brings together a touch of history so this was yet another plus.
Complete this with a hearty portion of a full English breakfast served by the lovely Aferdita and the gorgeous area surrounding The Melita, with postcard-like buildings, local markets, parks and the iconic red phone booths contrasting against the white walls, and it becomes pretty clear why my stay was such a blissful perfection. The negatives? My room wasn’t cleaned in the morning, that being said, I never mentioned this to the members of the staff so they didn’t have the chance to solve this.
The Melita is a perfect choice if you’re looking for a quiet yet centrally located place. If you’re on a very small budget, the guesthouse may not be for you, although I do recommend spoiling yourself for at least one night to enjoy The Melita’s truly British atmosphere and a much more local yet sophisticated vibe than what you’d experience if you were to stay close to the main attractions. The great news is, The Melita regularly hosts Instagram competitions where you can win a free night stay, so be sure to join in!
