Travelling has always been a passion of mine, however, being able to turn it into a lifestyle where every month brings an exciting dose of new experiences and the road no longer represents the unknown but becomes home, has for a long time seemed like a dream. When, a couple of years back, I left my 9-5 and began working freelance that dream became a reality which, at times, still doesn’t feel quite real.
I can’t help but look back at 2015 and smile. From celebrating the Carnival in Venice, becoming friends with some of the most inspirational people I’ve ever had the chance to meet at TBEX Spain and Thailand, exploring the Balkans and flying halfway across the world to Bali to eventually decide to follow my heart and move to London, 2015 has been quite a ride. While I’ve worked extremely hard to sustain my travel lifestyle, I realise that not everyone is willing, or in the position, to take the same risks as I have. This is precisely why, when approached by AXA, one of the world’s leading insurance and asset management companies and the driving force behind the Great Global Adventure, I jumped at the opportunity to tell you about yet another way of turning that big dream of yours into reality.
The Great Global Adventure is a competition aimed at higher education students and recent graduates. Open globally, it offers young people the chance to win a whirlwind of travel experiences so exciting that I wish my student years weren’t quite over yet! The 2015 prize included, wait for it, a round-the-world trip of up to 8 months customised to your interests, 2 six-week paid internships at 2 different AXA locations worldwide, AND a voluntary experience with one of AXA’s Corporate Responsibility partners. Most of the travel, accommodation and living costs are also covered by AXA which means money won’t be an issue.
Last year’s winner was William Moore from the UK who, having completed various steps in the Great Global Adventure Game, which you can read about in detail (and apply for!) here, has been living the dream since September 2015, when he set off on his trip. His travels have already taken him to Hong Kong, China, Mongolia and Russia, while 2016 will see him visit Indonesia, Oceania and South America.
His Instagram feed is filled with winter wonderland adventures in the snowy Irkutsk, strolls through St Petersburg’s fairytale-like palaces and Moscow’s grand cathedrals, island hopping amongst the green hills of Hong Kong and exploring the wonders of Ulaanbaatar. But it’s not all about adventure to William. Whilst in Indonesia, William will volunteer with the Junior Achievement program Prestasi Junior Indonesia, a member organization of Junior Achievement and one of AXA’s CR partners.
I’ve always believed that the most fulfilling way to travel is by immersing in the local experiences and giving back to the local communities so it’s truly wonderful to see that AXA not recognises the importance of this, but also gives the winner the chance to indulge in travel in one of the most meaningful ways possible.
The best part? You too can follow into Will’s footsteps! While the 2015 competition is now closed, you have the chance to play again (and win!) in February 2016! To find out more about how and when to enter, have a look through the Great Global Adventure site .
I partnered with the brand to write this article but every word is mine.
